One of the best things about spring, besides the flowers blooming, is Spring Break. It’s a chance to get out and explore once again now that the world is waking back up. So here is a list of things to do to make the most of your Spring Break.
Kayak to Willamette Falls
Many people may not think about getting out on the water until it’s a bit warmer, but a spring-time paddle to Willamette Falls can be quite the fun experience. There are fewer people out on the water, so you practically get the river to yourself. Spring rains also mean the falls put on quite the show. Plus the springtime clouds make for some picturesque views as well, just wear layers and get ready for some epic views. Rent your craft from eNRG Kayaking in Oregon City. You can set out alone, or take one of their Willamette Falls Tours to learn about the history of the area.
Explore History
No doubt there will be a few times that the rain does show up during Spring Break… it is Oregon after all, and there’s a reason everything here is green. So if you’re looking to get out of the house but not necessarily outdoors, then it’s time to explore the many museums Oregon City has to offer. Visit the End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center to learn the stories of the pioneers and the indigenous peoples who have called this area home for centuries. Head over to the Museum of the Oregon Territory to see true historic artifacts from Oregon’s earliest days as a territory and before. From Native American petroglyphs to the original San Francisco plat map filed with the only Federal court in the region at the time, which was in Oregon City, history is alive here. If you’d like to experience the city’s history at your own pace, download the free Heritage Trail app from Oregon’s Mt. Hood Territory and explore half a dozen spots showcasing the rich history of Oregon City.
Dine Around Downtown
Downtown Oregon City is filled with outstanding restaurants. Whether you’re looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner, your options are seemingly endless. While down there, check out the local shops that line the street. You’ll find all sorts of options, from vintage toys to books and chic clothing. And the best part is with each dollar spent, you’re supporting locally owned businesses.
Ride The Municipal Elevator
No visit to Oregon City is complete without a visit to the only vertical street in the country. How does one traverse that street? By taking one of the only outdoor municipal elevators around as well! Oregon City’s Municipal Elevator has been helping travelers go up the bluff from 7th St. on the lower level to 7th St. above since 1955. And that elevator replaced the original that was built in 1915. Plus, the view from the upper level observation deck is worth the visit alone.
Sample some craft beverages
So not everything during Spring Break is for the kids, right? Set out to sample some of the best and most unique craft beer around at the many breweries in Oregon City. Sure you’ll find some IPAs, this is the Pacific Northwest after all. But you can also sample something unique, like the Creamy & Dreamy at Oregon City Brewing, or the Hot Coffee Cakes Chocolate Habanero Stout at Cointoss Brewing. Not into beer? Try some sweet or dry ciders at 12 Bridge Ciderworks or Trillium Gin at Trail Distilling.
There’s always something to explore in Oregon City, helping to ensure that this Spring Break is one you’ll remember for years to come.
